BUYER’S GUIDE

Electric forklifts

Everything you need to choose an electric forklift: the main truck types, lithium iron phosphate vs. lead-acid vs. propane, charging options from a 110 V wall outlet to 480 VAC, and what it costs to run one over five years.

01 / THE BASICS

What is an electric forklift?

An electric forklift is a lift truck powered by a rechargeable battery and electric motors instead of a propane, gasoline, or diesel engine. The battery feeds the drive motors that move the truck and the hydraulic pump motor that raises and tilts the mast.

Because there is no engine, electric forklifts produce no tailpipe exhaust, run quietly, and have far fewer parts to service: no oil changes, spark plugs, coolant, or exhaust system. That makes them the default choice for warehouses, food and beverage, cold storage, and any indoor operation, and a growing choice outdoors.

The battery is the heart of the truck. BYD builds its own lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and engineers the truck, battery, and charger as one system.

02 / TRUCK TYPES

Types of electric forklifts

Electric material handling equipment covers more than one kind of truck. Match the type to your loads, floors, and space.

Cushion tire forklifts

Built for smooth indoor floors. Cushion tire forklifts have a smaller footprint and a tighter turning radius than pneumatic-tire trucks, which makes them a strong fit for warehouses, manufacturing floors, and distribution centers.

Electric pallet trucks

For fast, frequent pallet moves. Walk-behind electric pallet trucks handle loading docks, cross-docking, and order staging without the cost of a full forklift.

Electric tow tractors

For moving many loads at once. Tow tractors pull carts and trailers through plants, airports, and large warehouses, replacing multiple forklift trips with one train.

03 / POWER SOURCE

Lithium vs. lead-acid vs. propane

The power source shapes your daily routine, your labor costs, and how long the truck lasts. Here is how the three most common options compare.

04 / CHARGING

Charging options

Electric forklifts charge wherever the right power is available. Pick the charger that matches your supply and how quickly trucks need to be back at work.

With lithium iron phosphate, there is no need for a separate charging room, battery-changing equipment, or spare batteries. Most operations opportunity charge during breaks and finish overnight.

05 / COST

Cost of ownership

An electric forklift usually costs more to buy than a propane truck, but it costs less to run. Electricity per hour is a fraction of the cost of propane, and with no engine there is less to service.

How to choose an electric forklift

Bring these details to your dealer and you will get a faster, more accurate recommendation.

  1. 01

    Load and lift height

Start with your heaviest regular load, its load center, and the highest rack you need to reach. Capacity drops as lift height increases, so size for the top of the rack, not just the floor.

  2. 02

    Floors and environment

Smooth indoor concrete suits cushion tires. Docks, yards, ramps, and uneven ground call for pneumatic-style tires and weatherproof motors.

  3. 03

    Aisles and space

Measure aisle widths, trailer entries, and turning areas. Three-wheel and cushion tire trucks fit where larger trucks cannot.

  4. 04

    Shifts and hours

Count operating hours per day and days per week. This sets the battery size and the charging plan.

  5. 05

    Charging windows and power

Note when trucks sit idle (breaks, shift changes, overnight) and what electrical supply is available near where they park.

  6. 06

    Service and support

Pick a dealer close to your site for planned maintenance, parts, and fast response when you need it.

07 / FAQ

Electric forklift
questions, answered.

How long does an electric forklift battery last?

BYD lithium iron phosphate batteries are rated to retain 70% or more of their capacity after 10,000 cycles and are designed to last over 15 years, so most trucks never need a replacement battery. BYD batteries are backed by a warranty of up to 10 years or 20,000 hours, subject to terms.

How long does it take to charge an electric forklift?

Charge time depends on the battery size, the charger, and how depleted the battery is. Lithium iron phosphate batteries can be opportunity charged during breaks and fully charged overnight, so most operations never need to swap a battery mid-shift.

Can an electric forklift be charged from a regular outlet?

Yes, with the right charger. The BYD 110 V portable charger plugs into a standard 120 V single-phase outlet and draws a maximum of 15 A, so selected trucks can charge without three-phase power or special wiring. Larger fleets typically use 208 VAC or 480 VAC chargers for faster charging.

Can electric forklifts be used outdoors?

Many can. Pneumatic-style counterbalance forklifts with solid pneumatic tires and weatherproof AC motors, such as the BYD ECB series, are built for yards, docks, and rough surfaces. Cushion tire forklifts are best on smooth indoor floors.

Are electric forklifts cheaper than propane forklifts?

Electric forklifts usually cost more to buy but less to run. With no fuel cylinders to buy and lower service needs, BYD’s modeled five-year comparison shows a lower total cost for electric. Use the Why BYD Electric calculator to model your own hours and rates.

What is the difference between lithium and lead-acid forklift batteries?

Lithium iron phosphate batteries need no watering or equalizing, support opportunity charging, keep a steady voltage as they discharge, and last far longer. Lead-acid batteries need regular maintenance, a cool-down period after charging, and often a spare battery for multi-shift work.

How much weight can an electric forklift lift?

BYD electric forklifts are rated from 3,400 lb to 11,000 lb, covering three-wheel, counterbalance, and cushion tire models. The PMW 20 pallet truck moves loads up to 4,400 lb, and the T 50 tow tractor is rated at 11,000 lb.

Do electric forklifts need special maintenance?

Electric forklifts have fewer moving parts than internal combustion trucks: no engine oil, spark plugs, coolant, or exhaust system. With a lithium iron phosphate battery there is also no battery watering. Regular inspections and planned service with your dealer keep the truck running.
